Time to get pedaling!

Thursday, 1 August 2024 will be Cycle to Work Day, the UK's biggest cycle commuting event. It gives everyone – experienced cyclists and those who haven't cycled in years – the opportunity to experience the physical, mental, practical and financial benefits of cycling to work first-hand.

These benefits include:

  • Reducing environmental impact – Cycling to work is a great way to reduce your impact on the environment and to help contribute to reducing carbon pollution. 133,442 tonnes of C02 are saved each year by people cycling to work.
  • Lowering the cost of your commute – Cycling to work has a cheaper annual running cost, on average, than driving (nearly a tenth of the cost) and even public transport.
  • Improving health – Cycling reduces the risk of heart disease and cancer, and can be good for weight loss. It is estimated that a person who cycles to work will lose approximately 14lbs (6.35kg) in their first year.
  • Time – Half of all rush hour commutes can be done faster cycling than in the car.

If you would like to start commuting to work on a cycle, below are some tips to get you started:

  • Plan your route, checking whether there are any National Cycle Routes, cycle paths or quieter roads that you can take.
  • Consider getting to know the route at the weekend when it is quieter before you jump into the commute.
  • Find out where to lock your bike at work and, if needed, where changing and shower facilities are located.
  • Ensure you have the appropriate clothing and accessories, such as, cycling shorts, a helmet and lights.
  • Start slow, perhaps on one or two days a week, and work up to more days when you feel fit enough.

Many NHS organisations in Sussex have a salary sacrifice cycle to work scheme for staff. This allows entitles you to a voucher for cycling equipment that can be paid off in monthly instalments through your salary.

In addition to road bicycles, e-bikes are another way of actively travelling that can help you when your legs get tired, especially useful in hilly areas. You can hire these (and other bikes) at Sussex Bike Hire.

If you have a disability, there are a variety of inclusive cycles available. Wheels for Wellbeing is an independent organisation that can advise on all the different types, including handcycles, tricycles and adapted bicycles.
