Fairtrade Fortnight: Choose the World You Want
20 February 2021
By Hayley Carmichael
Fairtrade Fortnight is from 22 February to 7 March this year. Take part to help create a fairer, healthier world.
How does Fairtrade link to climate change?
Fairtrade Fortnight shines a spotlight on the farmers around the world who grow our food.
It asks us all to make the right choices, to support a fairer, healthier world for everyone.
The Fairtrade Foundation ensure that small farmers are paid a fair price, and on larger plantations that workers are treated fairly.
Farmers who become Fairtrade certified are paid a premium for their crops. Some of this is used to support community projects such as healthcare provision, schools and clean water. All of this helps people to lead healthier lives.
These farmers have shared their struggles in growing our food in a changing climate. Many suppliers are from the global south which is feeling the impact of climate change far more than the global north (which is the greater contributor to the causes of climate change).
Take part this Fairtrade Fortnight
This year the Fairtrade Foundation want us to “Choose the world you want” – and help them to amplify the voice of these farmers who we often rely on for our food supplies, and cotton for our clothes, to help them protect their land from the worst of climate change.
There is an online festival you can take part in throughout the fortnight – and don’t forget to also buy Fairtrade goods from coffee and tea to bananas and chocolate.
